Hello everyone!
We've been tucked away on two wonderful islands for the last three weeks or so, but we're back on the internet and ready to share our travels!
First up we headed to a town called Trang in the south of Thailand. From there we drove to a nearby pier and got on board a long tail boat to take us to Ko Kradan!
This guy piloted us from the mainland to Ko Muk and then to Ko Kradan. The journey took about 45 minutes.
Dropped off on the main stretch of beach, we weren't disappointed by what we found! Kradan's main stretch is a fairly narrow beach with resorts staged along the beach front.
Our accommodation was further down the beach. Apart from one road that leads inland, towards the other side of the island, getting around consists of walking along the shore.
Many of Thailand's islands are actually National Parks. The National Parks often offer accommodation. There were bungalows for 600B (12 pound a night) or these tents for 300B (6 pound a night). It's actually pretty expensive but by far the cheapest on Kradan. Expense was certainly a theme there, with very high food prices as well. Some of the resort accommodation prices were astronomical (we inquired out of interest) even though the accommodation wasn't anything special. The location, however, is, so it wasn't too surprising. Needless to say we picked the tent!
It certainly had a great location!
There were some wonderful trees encroaching onto the narrow beach. This swing was popular with visitors. In the morning and evening the island was fairly quiet but it soon became apparent that Ko Kradan is a hotspot for day trip visitors. Several boat-fulls of people visit the island at about midday causing a somewhat congested feel.
One of the main reasons the island is so popular is because of how accessible and spectacular the coral reefs are there. Snorkels can be rented everywhere and at low-tide you can literally walk out amongst it.
Eve took some wonderful snaps of the inhabitants!
Not all the wildlife was in the sea! Ko Kradan was the first place that we spotted these blue kingfishers. They're beautiful and thankfully quite common in the south!
Moving inland you quickly find yourself in an evergreen forest. We walked this way to get to the cheapest place to eat!
Unfortunately, a lot of the walking, swimming and snorkeling wasn't available to Jon, who's foot became infected on the way to Trang and got a lot worse on the island. The combination of expensive food and accommodation, busy days and a poorly Jon held enough gravity for us to make the decision to head back to the mainland and get him better.
Thankfully, we didn't need to leave the tent to see the sunrise on the morning we left!
Hopping back into another long-tail, we travelled back to the mainland and back to Trang. A decision not to take anti-biotics paid off and Jon fought off the infection with out nuking his system!
Ko Kradan wasn't too disppointing. Despite its price flaws and a poorly foot, it was simply a staggeringly beautiful place. It was the first time either of us had seen a location like it with our own eyes.
That said, all better and ready to go, we were determined to find a better location, for us, to head to next. In Ko Bulon Lae we found everything we could of asked for!
Hope you're all well.
Look out for Bulon Lae in the next post!
Lots of love,
Eve, Jon and Giraffery.
